Here’s a surprising truth that might just save you money: the cheapest laundry stain remover spray on the shelf isn’t just a budget buy—it’s a top performer, too. According to a recent test by consumer advocacy group Choice, a major Australian supermarket’s most affordable option outshone pricier competitors in tackling stubborn stains. But here’s where it gets controversial: does spending more on stain removers really guarantee better results? Let’s dive in.
Choice put 23 stain remover powders and 20 pre-treater sprays to the test, targeting everyday stains like sweat, grass, mud, and cooking oil, as well as tougher culprits like chocolate ice cream, tomato, baby food, blood, and makeup. In the spray category, Aldi’s Di-San Pro Ultra Degreaser With Enzymes tied for first place with Sard Super Power Stain Remover Toughest Stains, both scoring 78%. But the Aldi spray costs just 28¢ for 100ml ($2.09 a bottle), while the Sard version rings in at $1.90 for 100ml ($8 a bottle).
And this is the part most people miss: when it comes to common stains like sweat, olive oil, and baby food, the Aldi spray performed just as well as its pricier rival. Sard did edge out slightly on blood stains, but is the extra cost worth it? Choice senior product officer Chris Barnes weighs in: ‘If you’re on a budget, it’s hard to justify spending more on a Sard spray when the Aldi option works just as effectively.’
Other budget-friendly sprays also impressed. Aldi’s Di-San Pro Oxy With Enzymes took third place with a 75% score ($2.09), followed by Coles Ultra Pre-wash Stain Remover (73%, $2.10) and Woolworths Clean Ultimate Oil & Grime With Enzymes (72%, $2.10). Among branded sprays, only White King Fabric Stain Lift Colour Safe Pre-Treatment scored above 70%, at 73% ($5 a bottle).
But here’s the twist: when it comes to stain remover powders, brand names reigned supreme. Unlike past tests where cheaper supermarket powders often matched or outperformed big brands, this time Sard and Vanish dominated. Sard’s Super Power Stain Remover Toughest Stains Antibacterial Soaker led with 76% ($1.22 for 100g), followed by Sard Whiter & Brighter Stain Remover (75%, $1.10) and Vanish NapiSan Oxi Action Gold (73%, $1.70).
So, how did Choice test these products? They sprayed and soaked pre-stained fabric swatches, ensuring each stain—whether sweat or chocolate—was identical in color and intensity. ‘It’s not just a visual test,’ explains Barnes. ‘We measure the reflectance of light off the fabric to determine how much of the stain has been removed.’
Still unsure whether to spray or soak? Here’s a pro tip: pre-soak powders are ideal for treating entire soiled garments, like muddy sports uniforms. Sprays, on the other hand, are perfect for spot-cleaning smaller stains, like grimy collars or ice cream drips.
But here’s the real question: With budget options performing so well, is it ever worth splurging on premium stain removers? Or are we paying extra just for the brand name? Let us know your thoughts in the comments—we’d love to hear if you’ve had different experiences with these products!
