The Browns recently stormed Sunview Elementary School for their third 'Gym Class Takeover' event, with wide receiver Isaiah Bond and defensive end Alex Wright leading the charge. The school assembly erupted in cheers as these NFL stars entered the gymnasium, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.
Bond and Wright shared powerful messages about the importance of education and its role in achieving dreams. They engaged in a Q&A session, revealing their favorite pre-game snacks and the significance of school in their lives. Bond emphasized the impact of showing up and doing the little things consistently, a lesson that resonates with students striving for success.
But here's where it gets controversial: the event wasn't just about fun and games. The Browns presented a $2,500 check to the South Euclid-Lyndhurst City School District to combat chronic absenteeism, an issue plaguing many schools. This donation, made possible through the Cleveland Browns Foundation and Meijer, aims to make a tangible difference in the district's attendance efforts.
After the assembly, the real fun began! Fifty third-graders with good attendance records joined Bond, Wright, Chomps, and volunteers from Brush High School's Girls Flag Football team for a series of football and non-contact games. These activities weren't just about physical activity; they fostered communication, teamwork, and ball control skills.
"We're celebrating attendance and rewarding these kids," said Wright, highlighting the importance of showing up for school. But is this enough to tackle the complex issue of absenteeism?
The Stay in the Game! Attendance Network, launched in 2019 by the Cleveland Browns Foundation, Ohio Department of Education, and Harvard's Proving Ground, aims to reduce chronic absenteeism. With Battelle now at the helm, the Network partners with 237 districts, impacting over 600,000 students in Ohio. Sunview Elementary and the South-Euclid Lyndhurst City District joined this initiative in the 2023-24 school year.
Coordinator Dawn Imler, who serves as a liaison between Sunview and the Network, reminisced about the Browns' earlier efforts to boost attendance. She recalled the 'You Can Make It!' campaign, featuring recorded calls from players, which encouraged kids to attend school. Imler believes events like the Gym Class Takeover create lasting memories and reinforce the value of education.
The Browns' commitment to attendance doesn't stop there. Their 'Browns Flag In-Schools' initiative is active in 270 elementary schools across Northeast and Central Ohio, providing a foundation for healthy physical activity. This program works hand-in-hand with the Attendance Network, offering school-based activities to engage students and improve attendance.
Principal Arika Taylor of Sunview Elementary believes these events leave a lasting impression on students. She emphasized that seeing Chomps and Browns players creates memorable experiences, reminding students that attending school can lead to success.
