Dior Pre-fall 2026: Jonathan Anderson's Evolving Vision

Having made a splash with his debut collection last season, Jonathan Anderson is steadily building the foundation for his Dior woman. This pre-fall line showcases his ability to translate the bold concepts of his runway pieces into wearable, proportion-focused outfits.

Anderson's new jeans, for example, are as voluminous as pleated skirts, crafted from ultra-lightweight, faded denim. These jeans serve as a grounding element for various iterations of the iconic Bar jacket. The jacket is presented in different forms – cropped, elongated, plain, textured, and even transformed into coats.

"It just brings a contemporary edge to it, and I think it gives a different attitude to the Bar jacket," Anderson says of the oversized denim, which references Gen Z's love for "elephant leg" pants. "We have established the girl, and now we are expanding the wardrobe."

Anderson has emphasized from the start that his vision for Dior will evolve over several seasons. This collection highlights some of his key design elements without settling on a single expression.

"Clothing is evolving and is changing, and I feel like Dior has got the capacity to invite multiple types of women in. For me, Dior is a very inclusive brand in that way," he explains.

There are nods to the brand's heritage, but they're not overly literal. Anderson cites the 1948 Arizona trapeze coat as a key inspiration, yet his versions are deconstructed to the point of abstraction. These include a chocolate brown jacket with a draped shawl collar and double-face striped blanket coats secured with hat pins.

The designer stays true to his comfort zone with craft-intensive pieces, such as a Bar jacket woven from multicolored ribbons, paired with folded balloon pants. These should appeal to fans of his cerebral designs for Loewe. Quirky knits, like a ribbed blue cardigan shaped like a tailcoat, strike a balance between creativity and commercial appeal.

But here's where it gets controversial... Anderson is still finding his footing with the romantic, feminine designs that fueled Dior's growth under his predecessor, Maria Grazia Chiuri.

His draped silk scarf dress, re-embroidered with laser-cut floral motifs, begs for a closer look, and slipdresses with stiff tulle underlays offer uncomplicated femininity. However, Anderson's red-carpet designs have proven more divisive.

He doubles down on voluminous, side-knotted designs, including a pistachio green version of the bustier gown worn by brand ambassador Mia Goth to the recent Governor's Awards in Los Angeles. Dresses with pointy cleavage, swept up into a side bow, provide an edgy take on the '50s throwback style using moiré silk.

Anderson expresses his enjoyment in expanding his creative range with the help of Dior's workshops, as he prepares to present his first haute couture collection in January.

"I like it, because it’s not something that I would initially be drawn to, so for me, it challenges my idea of how to make things as light as possible," he says. "I want the exercise to be different than my previous job, but I don’t want to rush at it. I really believe that you cannot lock down an entire aesthetic in nine months."

His initial designs are already on display at La Galerie Dior, the brand's permanent exhibition space in Paris, alongside the work of his predecessors. How does he feel about this? "Very scary. Very intimidating," Anderson admits.
