The boxing world is holding its breath as Janibek Alimkhanuly's title reign hangs in the balance. The Kazakhstan-born fighter is awaiting the results of a B-sample test, scheduled for January 8, after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium in a November 15 sample collected by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).
The Controversy Surrounding the Positive Test
Alimkhanuly, 17-0 (12 KOs), was set to face WBA 160lbs titlist Erislandy Lara in a three-belt unification clash on December 6 in San Antonio, but was removed from the fight after the positive test result. He has maintained his innocence, expressing surprise and confusion over how the banned substance entered his system.
"I have always supported clean sport, you know this well," Alimkhanuly stated on social media. "I was surprised when I read the news. VADA took the first test and said everything was clean. I have not made any changes to my vitamins."
The Investigation Continues
As the investigation unfolds, Alimkhanuly's IBF and WBO title reigns are at risk, along with a potential suspension should he fail to be cleared of wrongdoing. The B-sample test results will determine the next steps, and it's extremely rare for the results to differ from the initial test.
However, there have been cases where boxers were cleared due to contamination or a broken chain of custody in collecting the samples. Alimkhanuly's team is hoping for a similar outcome, but for now, the fighter is at the mercy of the investigating authorities.
A Career on the Line
Alimkhanuly has been a dominant force in the middleweight division, claiming the interim WBO 160lbs title in May 2022 and making five successful defenses, including three with the IBF belt at stake. His last fight was an April 5 homecoming title defense in Astana, Kazakhstan, and he has been under indefinite suspension pending the outcome of the investigation.
What do you think about Alimkhanuly's situation? Should he be given the benefit of the doubt, or is he guilty until proven innocent? Share your thoughts in the comments! [12[3}
