In the heart of Somerset, Kentucky, a remarkable transformation has taken place, turning a former furniture store into a vibrant creative hub. This story is a testament to the power of vision and community, and it all began with one man's dream.
The Visionary Carpenter
Todd Clayton, a carpenter and musician, had a simple initial plan: find a space for his woodshop and a small storefront. Little did he know, his journey would lead him to create something much bigger.
"I've always had this idea of wanting to inspire and encourage people to work with their hands," Clayton shared. And so, The Makers Mill was born, a creative haven that has become a destination for artists, musicians, and makers of all kinds.
A Creative Haven
The Makers Mill opened its doors in 2023, initially showcasing a diverse range of artisans and curators. From soap makers to woodworkers and vintage clothing enthusiasts, the space buzzed with creativity. However, a pivot in early 2025 saw the Mill embrace its musical side, becoming a hub for entertainment enthusiasts as well.
Among the vendors, you'll find unique offerings like Stringtown Soap Company, murals by Sarah Theresa Burns, and wood pieces crafted by Dr. Bill Caudill and Jay Alexander. But one of the standout attractions is Sarino's Sweet Shoppe, owned by Elizabeth Cole, offering small-batch candy and authentic Italian gelato.
"It's been a joy to introduce people to gelato and watch them become fans," Cole said. "The Makers Mill has been the perfect launchpad for my entrepreneurial journey."
A Multi-Purpose Hub
The Mill's evolution didn't stop there. It now boasts a bar, Finders Keepers, run by Anastasia Vassiliev, serving up cocktails and seasonal drinks. Blazn' Butts BBQ, an eatery by Jesse Merrick, adds to the culinary offerings. And for gamers, a mini arcade and a pool hall provide a fun escape.
This diverse range of attractions has made The Makers Mill the go-to spot for creatives and entertainment seekers in Somerset. Tiffany Finley, executive director of the Master Musicians Festival, partners with the Mill to host a popular monthly open mic night, drawing crowds and showcasing local talent.
"The Makers Mill embodies the vision of Somerset's evolution," Finley said. "It's not just a place; it's a community hub that celebrates artistic expression."
A Community Impact
The impact of The Makers Mill extends beyond its walls. Its presence has filled a void left by the closure of Jarfly Brewing Company, a beloved local spot. Clayton aimed to create a space that would attract and inspire, and he's succeeded.
"Jarfly was a special place, and to be associated with that legacy is an honor," Clayton reflected. "We hope to continue building on this momentum and inspire more creative ventures."
A Bright Future
As The Makers Mill continues to thrive, it serves as a shining example of what's possible when vision meets community. It's a destination that defines Somerset, attracting visitors and locals alike. With its unique blend of creativity, entertainment, and community spirit, The Makers Mill is a true gem, leaving a lasting impact on the town.
So, if you're ever in Somerset, Kentucky, be sure to stop by The Makers Mill and experience the magic for yourself!
