Could the Seattle Mariners be on the verge of a game-changing move? A bold trade proposal has emerged that could reshape their future, and it involves Detroit Tigers' left-handed ace, Tarik Skubal. In a recent analysis for Bleacher Report, Zachary D. Rymer floated an intriguing deal that aims to balance Seattle's financial constraints while significantly boosting their already formidable rotation. But here's where it gets controversial: the proposed trade might raise eyebrows, but it’s designed to make a splash.
Rymer’s proposal is straightforward yet unconventional: The Seattle Mariners acquire LHP Tarik Skubal, while the Detroit Tigers receive OF Randy Arozarena, RHP Bryce Miller, and OF Lazaro Montes (MLB No. 43). At first glance, this deal might seem odd, and Rymer himself acknowledges its unusual structure. “Does this one look weird? It probably does,” he wrote. The reason? It’s challenging to envision Seattle taking on Skubal’s potential $32 million salary in 2026 without shedding some payroll. In contrast, Arozarena and Miller are locked in at $18.1 million combined. However, Rymer argues that if adding Skubal means leading an already elite rotation, Seattle might willingly accept the $14 million increase.
And this is the part most people miss: For Detroit, the trade offers immediate value. Arozarena, an All-Star hitter entering his walk year, would instantly strengthen the Tigers' lineup. Meanwhile, Miller, who was Seattle’s standout pitcher in 2024 before an elbow injury in 2025, could seamlessly replace Skubal in the rotation. Rymer also highlights Miller’s contract control through 2029 and Montes’ potential as a top slugger, drawing comparisons to Yordan Alvarez.
However, the deal isn’t without its hurdles for Seattle. Here’s the controversial twist: The Mariners have been vocal about not trading away major league players, which immediately complicates the Arozarena/Miller component. Additionally, the franchise’s risk-averse nature might make them hesitant to go all-in on a rental player like Skubal. This raises a thought-provoking question: Are the Mariners willing to take a leap of faith for a chance at dominance, or will they play it safe?
What do you think? Is this trade proposal a win-win for both teams, or is it too risky for Seattle? Let us know in the comments below!
