Imagine the terror: a child brutally attacked, left for dead, all for an e-bike. That's the grim reality unfolding in Melbourne's east, and police are urgently seeking the public's help to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Here's what we know: On a seemingly ordinary Monday around 5 PM, two 13-year-old boys were enjoying a ride on their e-bikes along the Koonung Creek Trail in Doncaster East. Their peaceful afternoon was shattered when two masked individuals ambushed them. According to investigators, the nightmare began when the assailants targeted one of the boys, assaulting him before stealing his e-bike. Thankfully, this young victim managed to escape with minor injuries that didn't require hospitalization.
But the horror didn't end there. The second boy, understandably terrified, attempted to flee on his e-bike. A relentless chase ensued, culminating in a devastating crash near the Blackburn Road underpass. The boy collided with a wall, sustaining critical injuries. And this is the part most people miss – instead of offering aid, these heartless criminals seized the opportunity to steal his bike and abandon him at the scene.
The 13-year-old boy is now fighting for his life in the hospital, battling skull fractures, a severely broken leg, and a broken nose. Senior Constable Liam Webb expressed his outrage, stating, "It's quite deplorable seeing another human being laying down, in the bush, in pain, to just take his bike and ride off without rendering any help, it's quite disgusting." He emphasized that the boy's condition is so severe that they haven't been able to get a statement.
The suspects are described as Caucasian males, approximately 15 years old, around 165cm tall, and were wearing black ski masks and black clothing. One of the offenders was wearing a distinctive multi-coloured BAPE hoodie and has black hair. Police have released an image of the stolen e-bikes, hoping that someone who was in the area at the time might recognize them and come forward with crucial information.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some argue that the severity of the crime warrants a re-evaluation of e-bike safety regulations, particularly for younger riders. Should there be stricter laws surrounding e-bike ownership and usage? This incident highlights the vulnerability of young people and raises questions about the potential dangers of these increasingly popular vehicles.
The stolen bikes are described as e-bikes, which are bicycles with an electric motor to assist with pedaling. This can make them faster and easier to ride than traditional bikes, especially uphill. The increased speed, however, can also contribute to more serious accidents if riders aren't careful or experienced.
Police are urging anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact them immediately. You can also download the 9NEWS app to stay updated on this case and other breaking news. The app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
