Nicolai Budkov Kjaer is on the cusp of reaching the semi-finals at the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF, following an impressive performance in Jeddah on Thursday. He triumphed over Spanish player Rafael Jodar with a score of 4-1, 4-2, 1-4, 4-2, solidifying his position in the tournament.
This victory comes after Kjaer, hailing from Norway, had already achieved a remarkable win against Martin Landaluce in his opening match of the Blue Group, bringing his record to 2-0 this week. Despite facing a spirited effort from Jodar during the match, Kjaer maintained his composure to secure the win at the King Abdullah Sports City.
"I’m just trying to concentrate on winning my matches, but qualifying would definitely be exciting, so I really hope that happens," Budkov Kjaer expressed after the match. "I started off great... Everything I hit was going in, and I think Rafa was a bit nervous, which is totally understandable. It’s challenging to follow up a big win with another match. I’m really pleased with my performance and the victory, of course."
In front of an enthusiastic audience, Kjaer showcased his skills by serving two aces and delivering an unreturned first serve in his last service game, concluding the match in a swift 79 minutes. This win also served as a measure of revenge for Budkov Kjaer, who had previously lost to Jodar in the boys' singles final at the 2024 US Open.
The 19-year-old athlete stands on the brink of qualifying for the semi-finals later on Thursday, contingent on Martin Landaluce defeating Learner Tien. Even if Tien, the top seed, secures a victory later on Day 2, Budkov Kjaer remains in a strong position to advance to the semi-finals of this prestigious under-20 event.
Kjaer's season has been nothing short of outstanding; he has clinched four titles on the ATP Challenger Tour and ascended from outside the Top 500 to a notable No. 138 in the PIF ATP Rankings.
On the other hand, Jodar, who has claimed three Challenger Tour titles this year, made headlines by upsetting World No. 28 Tien in his first match in Jeddah, marking his first victory against a Top 100 player. Currently, the 19-year-old Spaniard holds a 1-1 record this week and is set to face Landaluce in his final round-robin match, still very much in the running for a spot in the semi-finals.
