The arrests of pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of Michigan represent a blatant attack on free speech and a disturbing trend of suppressing dissent. The International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE), the youth wing of the Socialist Equality Party (SEP), is vehemently condemning the recent arrests and the forceful crackdown on a demonstration against the ongoing conflict in Gaza at the University of Michigan (U-Mich). They're calling on the entire university community and beyond to rally in support of the arrested individuals and demand the immediate dropping of all charges.
On October 22, approximately 300 demonstrators, organized by the pro-Palestinian TAHRIR Coalition, gathered outside the Rackham Graduate School. Their protest was aimed at an event hosted by the U-Mich chapter of Students Supporting Israel (SSI), which featured two former members of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as speakers.
This event was part of the SSI's national "Triggered: Combat on College" tour, which had already visited 20 college campuses this year. The SSI claims the tour features "IDF reservists sharing firsthand stories from October 7th and beyond."
But here's where it gets controversial... The IDF is currently embroiled in a conflict in Gaza, where major international organizations, including the United Nations and groups like Amnesty International, have accused Israel of committing war crimes.
Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, the U-Mich administration deployed a heavy police presence. According to a protester's account, University of Michigan Police Department (UMPD) officers appeared abruptly, confronting protesters, pinning them to the ground, and threatening the use of pepper spray.
Melissa Overton, the deputy chief of police for the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS), stated that three protesters, not affiliated with the University of Michigan, were arrested on charges including resisting and obstructing police, attempting to disarm an officer, and disorderly conduct.
Dan Viderman, the president of the U-Mich Students Supporting Israel chapter, labeled the protesters as antisemitic, claiming they were there to protest Judaism and that their presence made Jewish students uncomfortable.
And this is the part most people miss... The charges against the protesters are seen as baseless attacks on free speech and political expression. The university is accused of providing a platform for those accused of genocide while simultaneously attacking those who protest against it.
These arrests are not isolated incidents. The U-Mich administration has been escalating its actions against pro-Palestinian protesters, including disciplinary charges against 11 protesters in July and 7 more in September.
The situation is further complicated by the political climate. Following Trump's 2024 election, the university administration has been accused of aligning itself with the new administration's demands to suppress political opposition. This is evident through the establishment of the Office of Student Accountability (OSA) and revisions to the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities (SSSR), which have granted administrators increased power to bypass due process and retroactively apply disciplinary standards.
These bureaucratic tools are allegedly being used to punish students engaged in anti-war and anti-genocide activism, under the guise of maintaining "safety" and "inclusivity." The administration's claim that protests are disruptive is seen as a pretext for silencing opposition to US-backed actions abroad and suppressing the growing movement of students and workers who reject the university's complicity in war and repression.
The attack on democratic rights at U-Mich is not an isolated campus issue; it's part of a broader trend. The Trump administration is seen as erecting a presidential dictatorship, with the working class as its primary target.
Trump is portrayed as a representative of the corporate-financial oligarchy that controls the country's wealth and both major political parties. This oligarchy is allegedly dismantling social programs to impose the crisis on the working class and youth, leading to a shift towards dictatorship and fascism.
The IYSSE argues that the opposition to the attack on democratic rights must be independent of the Democratic Party and all other representatives of US imperialism. The Democrats are viewed as accomplices, motivated by the need to control the growing social opposition.
The IYSSE advocates for building an independent anti-war movement led by the international working class and guided by socialist principles. They support the Socialist Equality Party's call for establishing rank-and-file committees in every workplace, neighborhood, and school to coordinate the struggles of workers and youth.
They believe that the criminal mega-billionaire oligarchy must be expropriated, and major banks and corporations should be transformed into public utilities operated under democratic workers' control. Those seeking to oppose the attacks on democratic rights, fascist dictatorship, war, and genocide are encouraged to join the IYSSE and fight for socialism.
