Initially revealed during Nintendo’s Direct event last year as part of the celebration for Mario's 40th anniversary, this enhanced edition of Super Mario Bros. Wonder for the Nintendo Switch 2 is much more than just visual improvements or performance upgrades. While players can certainly expect better graphics and smoother gameplay, the real highlight is the enhanced multiplayer experience, centered around the brand-new area called Bellabel Park.
Bellabel Park serves as a vibrant social hub filled with mini-games and attractions specifically designed for group play. The trailer introduces us to two key areas: the Local Multiplayer Plaza and the Game Room Plaza.
In the Local Multiplayer Plaza, up to four players can engage in either competitive or cooperative modes across 17 different attractions. Thanks to GameShare support, only one player needs to own the game to enjoy the fun. Meanwhile, the Game Room Plaza caters to local wireless or online play, allowing each participant to use their own console. This plaza features six attractions and accommodates up to eight players locally, with the capacity to host twelve players online.
Furthermore, multiplayer elements are being integrated into the main story mode through a new feature called Toad Brigade Training Camp, where up to four players can work together to achieve specific goals, such as collecting a designated number of coins within a set timeframe from various courses in the main game. Players will have the opportunity to advance their ranks and aspire to the Elite Explorer status. Additionally, there's an engaging side quest involving seven mischievous Koopalings who have absconded with Bellabel Park’s treasure and are now hiding throughout the Flower Kingdom.
A significant addition to the character roster is Rosalina, who will be fully playable across all modes. Accompanied by her trusty sidekick Luma, players can also utilize Luma as a support character to gather coins and strike enemies. The game incorporates a mouse mode on the Nintendo Switch 2, enabling players to control Luma with ease.
The trailer teases a mysterious new power-up at the end, showcasing Mario collecting a flower and sporting a floral-themed outfit while launching flowery discs into the air. However, the specifics of this ability remain under wraps, leaving fans eager for more details as the release date approaches.
