Love, Secrets, and a Bidding War: Rebecca Yarros’ ‘The Last Letter’ Heads to Amazon MGM in a Major Deal
In a move that has the entertainment industry buzzing, Amazon MGM has secured the movie rights to The Last Letter, a heart-wrenching romance novel by bestselling author Rebecca Yarros, following a fierce and high-stakes bidding war. But here’s where it gets controversial: can a story this emotionally charged truly translate to the big screen without losing its soul? Only time will tell.
Journalist-turned-screenwriter Anna Klassen is in final negotiations to pen the adaptation, with Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody of Imagine Entertainment in talks to produce. Yarros, already a powerhouse in the literary world, has taken the romantasy genre mainstream with her Empyrean series, which kicked off with Fourth Wing in 2023 and has since sold over 12 million copies. The Last Letter, however, is a departure from her fantastical roots, offering a straight-up romance that has reignited Hollywood’s interest after its re-release this year.
The novel is a tearjerker—and we mean major tearjerker—centered on an Army veteran who honors a promise to a fallen comrade by traveling to a picturesque Colorado town to care for his friend’s sister and her two children. But this isn’t your typical feel-good story. The vet carries a devastating secret, one of the children battles cancer, and the sister struggles to trust the brooding, yet undeniably attractive, stranger (who, yes, comes with a loyal dog). It’s a recipe for emotional turmoil, and readers on BookTok and in book clubs couldn’t get enough of its raw intensity.
The studios took notice, big time. Five major players—Amazon, Netflix, Paramount, and others—engaged in a heated bidding war, with offers soaring and deadlines looming. Paramount, fresh off the success of the romantic drama Regretting You, made a strong play, but Amazon ultimately emerged victorious with a deal in the $200,000 range, a potential $2 million purchase price, and significant backend payouts. Yarros will also serve as an executive producer through her newly formed company, Full Measures, named after her debut novel.
And this is the part most people miss: this isn’t Yarros’s first Hollywood rodeo. Fourth Wing is already in development as a television adaptation at Amazon, with heavy hitters like Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society and Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Kilter Films on board. Meanwhile, Klassen is quickly becoming the go-to screenwriter for romance adaptations, having penned the upcoming The Last Sunrise based on Anna Todd’s novel, currently in production at Amazon with stars Maia Reficco and Eva Longoria.
The deal for The Last Letter is impressive for a mid-budget adult drama, but it underscores the growing appetite for stories that evoke the same emotional depth as classics like The Notebook or Dear John. Yarros’s ability to weave heart-wrenching narratives has cemented her as a force to be reckoned with, both in publishing and now in Hollywood.
Imagine Entertainment’s Jeb Brody and Joyce Choi will oversee the project, adding it to their roster of recent successes like Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt and Ron Howard’s Eden. Yarros is represented by Untitled and Weintraub Tobin, while Klassen is repped by WME, Untitled, and Myman Greenspan.
So, here’s the question: Can The Last Letter capture the same emotional intensity on screen as it did on the page? Will it become the next great romantic drama, or will it fall short of the novel’s impact? Let us know your thoughts in the comments—we’re all ears!
