In a surprising turn of events, a seasoned rugby player has decided to come out of retirement after being released from a Super League team, joining another club in the Championship. This story revolves around Ukuma Ta’ai, a 38-year-old veteran forward formerly with the Huddersfield Giants. Having announced his retirement just a few months prior, Ta’ai is now stepping back onto the field, taking on a dual role as both a player and coach at Newcastle Thunder.
This decision comes after the York Knights, his previous club, revealed several departures in early October, which included Ta’ai among other players. Many thought this was the end of his active playing days, but just three months later, he has reversed that choice and will now bring his experience to Newcastle Thunder. This makes him part of a growing trend, as he becomes the eighth player to transition from York to Newcastle, following a collaborative agreement between the two clubs, which has facilitated the movement of a total of nine players from North Yorkshire to the North East.
Joining Ta’ai is Ireland international Jack Brown, who has also signed with the Thunder, marking him as the ninth player to make this significant switch. They will be accompanied by a group of players including Brenden Santi, Bailey Antrobus, Sam Cook, Jude Ferreira, Myles Harrison, Joe Law, and Brad Ward—all of whom have left York in anticipation of their maiden Super League season to join Newcastle.
Upon announcing Ta’ai’s new role, Newcastle Thunder emphasized the substantial impact they expect him to have, noting that his experience will be crucial for the development of younger players within the team. A statement from the club read: "Ukuma’s influence is expected to be massive for a developing Thunder group, with his presence set to accelerate the growth of younger players and drive performance standards throughout the club."
Head coach Graham Steadman expressed his enthusiasm about Ta’ai’s contributions, stating: "His knowledge of the game, professionalism, and standards will be invaluable both on and off the field, as he takes on a dual role that will see him contribute as a senior player while also helping to develop and mentor the Thunder squad."
As for Jack Brown, Newcastle Thunder shared their excitement in welcoming him to the team ahead of the 2026 Betfred Championship campaign. His international experience with the Irish rugby league team is expected to enhance the competitiveness and quality of the Thunder squad as they gear up for the upcoming season.
